Hesquiaht Photographs

Hundreds of extremely rare photographs of Hesquiaht are currently being formatted and made available to view on hesquiaht.org. While all of these photographs portray Hesquiaht people, places and events, it is important to note that they are simply just a small glimpse in a much greater holistic cultural context.

Some of these photographs have elder audio recordings attached. These recordings identify the photographs and add important historical information. The recordings also tell stories and give insight to the joys and struggles Hesquiaht's faced so long ago.

Upcoming Photograph Collections:

National Film Board black and white/colour 1972

This collection of photographs was repatriated to Hesquiaht First Nations in the early seventies. The photography was mainly done by members of the Catholic mission at the time in Hesquiat. What is exceptionally relevant to these photographs, is the Hesquiaht elders alive at the time of the clergies photography, lend detailed audio records of the photographs themselves. These photographs date back from 1900 to 1935.
